As I've said, it's hard to love Brussels when its only 7 degrees out. It's even harder when at 7:30 am, after lugging your backpack around in confused circles, you discover that the hotel you thought you had a reservation at closed down one week ago. Two hours later, after hitting impressive lows of poor map reading, leading to subsequent adventures of misdirection, we found ourselves at the "Sleep Well" where we booked a private room and fell into bed. While I went right to bed, Nina declared that she felt the urge to take a bath. When prompted later as to why she actually took this bath considering the fact that our tub was half sized, and mostly taken up by a built in seat, she had no satisfactory answer. Clearly sleep addled it seemed perfectly acceptable to cram herself into the foot of this tub, knees to chin, shivering bitterly.
In the late afternoon, we roused ourselves, and dressed in Brussels appropriate clothing left to check out the town. We were pleasantly met with elegant shops, health conscious- enviro-friendly cafes, and plenty of chocolate. Our experience came close to being downright charming if it hadn't been so damn cold. I especially loved the moment when I ate soup for lunch, and said a silent prayer for my deliverance from panini and pizza.
The next day we visited some art galleries, admired some architecture, and did some more window shopping. Though it was still cold and rainy we both agreed that Brussels had been unexpectedly pleasant.
Stay tuned for our impressions of Bruges...
