On our way to the Jewish Museum my Dad reflected to our taxi driver that he thought Berlin was a great city. The taxi driver replied curtly, "for some." My Dad prompted him to elaborate, and he told us that the economy was bad. My Dad then asked him if he was from Berlin. He replied, "yes, West Berlin." My Dad then asked if there was much resentment from the West towards the East. "Yes," was the reply again, and he explained that there was much resentment because of the financial strain re-unification placed on West Germany.
We left him wondering how many people still prefix their identity with "East" or "West".
